After his first split from that band in 1985, not long after the release of his debut EP Crazy from the Heat, he began a high-profile solo career that featured Steve Vai on guitar, Billy Sheehan on bass and Gregg Bissonette on drums. Together, this lineup recorded two albums (1986's Eat 'Em and Smile and 1988's Skyscraper) before Sheehan and Vai went their separate ways, with the former starting Mr. Big and the latter joining Whitesnake before focusing on a solo career. After the pair (and eventually Bissonette himself) split, Roth continued to release a handful of solo albums before and after rejoining Van Halen briefly in 1996 (he eventually rejoined the band permanently in 2006).
